UPCOMING SCREENINGS
Live World Premiere of The Healer Stones of Kapaemahu - Bishop Museum
This very special event on the Great Lawn of the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum is also the Grand Opening of The Healer stones of Kapaemahu exhibition, which runs June 17 - October 16, 2022. Reserve tix for the premiere screening event & exhibition preview HERE.
On Honolulu’s famed Waikiki Beach stand four giant boulders placed as a tribute to the four legendary mahu—individuals of dual male and female spirit—who brought the healing arts from Tahiti to Hawai‘i long ago. Although the stones have survived for centuries, their story has been hidden and the respected role of mahu erased. The Healer Stones of Kapaemahu documents the trail of post-colonial suppression through the eyes of a Native Hawaiian director—Wong-Kalu identifies as mahu—and uses rare archival materials, new historical findings, and vivid animation to bring the complete story back to life. This is the first feature documentary to be presented in ‘Ōlelo Kanaka Niihau, the only form of the Hawaiian language unbroken by foreign contact.

Sneak Preview - Smithsonian Museum Mother Tongue Film Festival
The Smithsonian’s seventh annual Mother Tongue Film Festival screens online from February 17 to March 4. This is the first time that the Festival is using ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi as the theme.
As one of the oldest living languages in the world, ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian Language) has a deep, but tumultuous history, including a ban that suppressed the teaching/learning of the Hawaiian Language, nearly extinguishing its use.
The festival’s Closing Night event offers a single-night sneak preview of director Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu’s latest feature film with collaborators Dean Hamer and Joe Wilson, The Healer Stones of Kapaemahu. This will be their third screening at the Mother Tongue Film Festival, following the feature documentary Leitis in Waiting in 2019 and the animated short Kapaemahu in 2021.
Tickets are free and can be reserved here.

HŌʻEA Kānaka Maoli Film Showcase - Honolulu
July 31 is a national holiday known as Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea (Sovereignty Restoration Day). King Kamehameha III established this holiday in a days-long celebration following the rightful return of sovereign government to Hawaiʻi by the United Kingdom, after an illegal seizure by one of their representatives. He proclaimed, “Ua mau ke ea o ka ʻāina i ka pono”–the ea (sovereignty, life, breath) of our land is perpetuated through justice. Hawaiians continue to breathe life into our sovereignty, and one way we do this is to celebrate ka Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea. After decades of suppression, the celebrations were revived in 1985 by Uncle Kekuni Blaisdell and other kānaka aloha ʻāina as a way to give voice to Hawaiian independence and to issues surrounding the return and demilitarization of Hawaiian lands.
Alongside the HŌʻEA Kānaka Maoli Film showcase, we are proud to bring our lāhui another amazing night of Hawaiian films by Hawaiian film makers. This evening will feature three new projects, including the award winning film Kapaemahu by director Kumu Hina Wong, a special showing of the short film by award winning kanaka film maker ʻĀina Paikai and Kaliko Maii about the legendary aloha ʻāina, George Helm, entitled Hawaiian Soul, and finally a short documentary by award winning filmmaker Ciara Lacey called This is How We Rise, which features wahine poet, activist, and academic, Heoli Osorio.
